This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.
The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
